A TRUSTED NAME
FOR THREE GENERATIONS

We are proud to stand behind our reputation gained over three generations in the Lobster Capital of the World:  Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada.

Our Story

First Generation

Our company began in 1946. Mr. Ernest Maillet bought fresh seafood, and especially lobster, straight off the boats in Shediac, New Brunswick, and peddled it door to door in local communities.

A few years later, in 1952, Ernest opened a canteen on Main Street in Shediac to sell cooked lobster to the public during the summer tourist season, which coincides with our local lobster fishing season. The business’s only source of revenue was counter sales until 1958. Shediac Lobster Shop then obtained its first fish processing license.

The business was operated under the sole proprietorship of Mr. Maillet for the following ten years.

He continued to sell lobster at the retail counter to the public, but now also packaged hand-shucked lobster meat in tin cans to be sold in larger quantities sent to Montreal and to international customers as well.

Shediac Lobster grew to employ 45 people.

Second Generation

In 1967, Mr. Hector Maillet joined his father in the business. In 1968, Shediac Lobster Shop was incorporated and obtained its charter as a limited company.

In 1977, Hector acquired a part of the business from his father and became a director of the company, and the next year Hector Maillet became general manager of a company that now served wholesale clients.

The business under Hector truly boomed. This second generation started exports to the United States: to Boston and New York, and to customers in Florida. By now, Shediac Lobster Shop Ltd. employed 140 people in the cannery.

Third Generation

The company today, in its third generation, has continued to grow and develop. We employ a work force of over 250 employees and the company is still owned in total by the Maillet family.

Mr. Gilles Maillet, eldest son of Hector, serves the company as CEO and his brother, Mr. Serge Maillet, is COO.

Together the sons work to continue building this reputable and innovative lobster processing company and strive to satisfy the demands of their ever-multiplying customers.

The once-tiny cannery is now a thriving production facility with a full range of lobster products, customized for a wide range of clients. The once-small local business now encompasses a live holding facility, a 35,000 sq. ft.  plant,  and its own trucking division.

Exports have expanded throughout North America, Asia, and, more recently, new markets in Europe.

Shediac Lobster Shop Ltd. looks forward to many successful years to come.
